Like Pakistan there are in numerous cases of honor killing in India. Honor killing is a social menace in India.States like Punjab and Haryana are most effected. Haryana has a dismal performance of human right violation against women.The Supreme Court of India termed honor killing as barbaric and shameful acts of murder.But these type of incident increases.Most of the victims are girls and young couples.Marrying out of caste or religion outraged family members and they have no regret.Even father and brother shot dead their daughter and sister for ‘protecting the family’s honor’. The Judges of Punjab and Haryana High Court expressed their concern over the issue.
According to United Nations Commission on Human Rights, honor killings have occurred in countries like India,Bangladesh, Pakistan,England,Brazil, Ecuador,Egypt, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Morocco,Turkey,Sweden,Uganda.
In India,1,000 women are killed annually in the name of honor of the family. Honor Killing is rampant in the states of Punjab and Haryana.
Here some recent incidents of honor killing which grabbed the headlines:
On July 30,2019,a dalit family of Dhalla village, 35 km from Tarn Taran in the Indian state of Punjab, allegedly killed three members of the groom’s family at nearby Naushehra village on Monday night.
On July 29, Two persons were arrested by Amritsar Police for killing a girl and her alleged paramour by the girl’s family in Majitha three days ago.
On April 21, a youth named Malkiat Singh (23) of Noorwala village in Tarn Taran was allegedly murdered at Valtoha village, 40 km from here.The police arrested three members of a family of the girl whom he had an affair.
On March 19, e Sriganganagar police of Abohar in the state of Punjab, arrested several people for the killing a young girl named Krishna in a case of honor killing.
On August 14, 2018, a person poisoned her teenage daughter and waited for her to die.He had a plan to dump his daughter’s body to river Ganges when she died so that nobody can trace the body. Some youth noticed her when she sought their help as she sat on a bench near a crematorium. She indicated that her father poisoned her.They immediately informed the Muzaffarnagar police.They also noticed that a man standing near the girl but quickly vanished while they were talking to her.The police admitted the girl to a nearly primary heath center but she died later.A police team arrested the man named Sundar Singh from a forest.He was the resident of Sikrod village in Ghaziabad.He confessed to police that he killed her daughter for her ‘ bad character’.
On May 15, a young couple were allegedly killed by the girl’s family members in Khemkaran area of Tarn Taran.
On March 11, a woman was allegedly shot dead by her cousin at Haiderpur village in Muzaffarnagar, UP, over an ‘ illicit relationship’ with another cousin.
