Bishow Parajuli, the World Food Programme’s (WFP) Representative and Country Director in India, remarked that despite the government’s efforts, the assistance provided is insufficient, particularly for the poorest sectors of the population who are facing job loss and pay loss.
In an interview with UN News on June 3, Parajuli said the Indian government had restored its assistance for the first COVID-19 wave, providing an additional five kg of cereal, rice, and wheat to help households and individuals.
India has a number of initiatives to address the food gap and nutritional concerns, according to Parajuli, but COVID has slowed them down. He emphasised the importance of paying attention to the nutritional needs of nursing and pregnant women, as well as children. According to a recent study, women often eat last and eat less, which is why the World Food Programme is lobbying for women to have equal access to food assistance.
