Since the imprisonment of Iraqi Kurdish journalist Sherwan Sherwani a week ago, no one knows where he is and what his state of health is. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is worried about his fate and asks the authorities to allow his lawyer to visit him as soon as possible.
His lawyer gave the alert. Iraqi Kurdish independent journalist Sherwan Sherwani , arrested at his home by security forces on October 7, remains in jail and his place of detention remains unknown. Members of the Movement for Change, a political party represented in the Iraqi parliament in Baghdad, were particularly alarmist, saying in a statement that the journalist’s life was in danger.
The Kurdistan Autonomous Government’s international advocacy coordinator, Dindar Zebari, accused the journalist of having received “foreign funds with the aim of destabilizing the country”, a crime punishable by life imprisonment. The Kurdish representative also accuses Sherwan Sherwani of endangering the lives of judges and of encouraging violence in anti-government demonstrations.
According to information gathered by RSF, the journalist who had information on a politically sensitive affair was forced to confess these official charges, probably under torture.
“We are very concerned about the fate of Sherwan Sherwani in prison ,” said Sabrina Bennoui, head of the Middle East office at RSF. The prison administration must allow his lawyer to visit him and his family to communicate with him in order to ensure his state of health. The authorities must conduct judicial proceedings in full transparency and in accordance with their own Constitution. ”
This is not the first time that the Iraqi Kurdish authorities have put pressure on Sherwan Sherwani. In 2012, he was arrested for investigating a corruption case. A few months later, he was sued for defamation by a nephew of President Masoud Barzani. In 2017, during the referendum on the independence of the region, the journalist received death threats . Finally, in 2019, he was arrested after covering a demonstration on the Turkish border.
Iraq occupies 162nd place in the World Press Freedom Index established by RSF.
